Russian Tortoise UVB (are MVB bad?)

I'm still confused about the UVB bulb situation. I want to avoid coil bulbs, but MVB seem to die or break easily according to other posts or reviews I've seen. Would these bulbs work...

    Plant ID's

The weather's warming up again... As much as Washington ever warms up [emoji28]. Since my tortoise has been inside for a few months, the outdoor enclosure has grown quite a few weeds. I checked the tortoise table database and most of these just look like weeds, but I'm concerned about the...

How close should the heat lamp be?

The temperature here dropped drastically yesterday so my RT's basking spot was barely 75 degrees. I lowered the heat lamp but since the heat lamp and uvb bulb are attached to the same fixture, the uvb bulb is also closer. The two bulbs are about 8 or 9 inches away from Gobi. Is that too close?

    Croaking?

Yesterday my Russian tortoise got a little bit of butternut squash as a treat (I rarely give it to him since I know it's high in sugar). After eating it he seemed really energetic so I took him outside, where he barreled around like crazy. When he came inside he just crashed and slept since...

    Bird net? (New outdoor enclosure)

Recently the climate around here is suitable to let my rt outside, so I am in the process of building a new outdoor enclosure. It's around ten feet by about seven feet. For the wall I have layered two bricks on top of each other so that he can't climb out. He has a saucer for water and a hide. I...

    Rt's new enclosure= stress?

I recently decided to expand my Russian tortoise's indoor enclosure. I'm planning to make it multilayered and right now I only have the first floor done, so it's pretty small (only around 3x4 right now, but don't freak out, I'm definitely going to add more space :p) I put him in the enclosure...

    THANKS EVERYONE

First off, I'm just going to say that when I started as a tortoise owner, I was clueless. My poor Russian tortoise, Gobi, lived in a tiny enclosure for almost a month, with almost solely lettuce. Then I found this forum, and I'm so glad I did! Everyone was very welcoming and put up with my...

    Slugs and pennies?

I recently found a slug on my rt out in the greenhouse. I've heard about the beer method, but I don't want a backyard full of dead, alcohol smelling slugs. I also want a more ethical way to get rid of slugs (forgive me :p). Some people say that burying pennies near the surface of the dirt shocks...

    Aloe?

Is aloe safe to feed tortoises? If it is, how do you prepare it?

    Fruit eating species?

Which species of tortoises eat fruit? I know it can be harmful to tortoises.

    Lethargic, just wants to sleep

My Russian tortoise, Gobi, has been extremely active for the past week, even eating more than usual. Yesterday he just seemed to completely shut down. When I gave him lettuce he didn't eat it, but he did shake and twitch his head a bit. He just walked away and dug into his burrow. We weren't...

    Quotes?

I've noticed that some people, underneath their messages, have a quote or a short statement, sort of like an email signature. It shows up on all of their quotes. Do you guys know how to do that?

above 85 degrees= bouncing off walls

A lot of people tell me that the temps in a Russian tortoise enclosure need to be around 100 degrees in the basking area. However, whenever the temperature rises above around 85 degrees, Gobi will start going crazy (I've mentioned this in a lot of my threads). He will climb onto his log and then...

    Tortoise will only hand eat

When my tortoise was a little gloomy from not being able to go outside (he was also a bit lethargic from low temperatures he's fine now) ) I hand fed him to make sure he was okay, and soon he was up and about and bouncing off the walls. After a while, though, he got used to being hand fed. I now...

    Outdoor greenhouse heater?

Does anybody have any recommendations for how to keep an outdoor enclosure warm? The temperature outside is only around 60 degrees and our greenhouse isn't insulated.

    Hyper Russian

My Russian has a huge outdoor enclosure, but sometimes it's too cold for him to go outside. As a result he'll try to get out of his terrarium, banging against the glass, moving his furniture, etc. He also refuses to stop and calm down enough to eat. What should I do?

    Feeding schedule?

I know tortoises are scavengers, and that they find food at different times each day. Should I replicate this, and feed smaller amounts several times each day? Right now he eats once (a very big meal) in the morning.

    Can tortoises jump?

So this is a very random question, but j was watching my tortoise outside and he climbed over a stick. I've never seen a tortoise jump, but can they do something similar?

    Gagging?

Today my tortoise was eating his breakfast (it was mainly lettuce, as the food I ordered hasn't arrived yet), and suddenly he did this weird thing where he kept opening and closing his mouth (mind you, it still had food in it) and turning his head from side to side. Usually he just does this a...

    Kind of pellet?

I'm worried that the selection of greens here (lettuce, kale, darker greens, arugula, dandelion, clover) isn't enough for my tortoise to eat. I've read that pellets can supplement his diet to make sure he gets nutrients. However, he's a picky eater and I don't know if he'll eat them. So far, the...
