    You are in California and thinking you need a heat source? Mine live outside in Eatsern PA, and hibernate underground in the cold months. I do not provide any heat for them. they live outdoors all year long.

    The reason turtle number one may be confusing is that it MAY still be a bit on the younger side, and therefore not sexually mature. If that were the case, it might be a male. Hard to know now.

    Joe'sMum- Just saying, Box turtles are no tortoises. Their care is different. Some people think boxies are torts and treat them as such.

    i use a very large cat litter box as the tub. i dug the area out, so it sits low, and i use rocks to help them get out.

    My sun is actually brightest in the late mornings. I plant Hostas, bc the slugs like them, and boxies like Slugs, but also they make a great place to hide. i have strawberry plants in there, Pachysandra, grass, ferns, lamium, clover.
