Hi! I was just checking out different types of substrates and stumbled upon the Lucky Reptile Desert Bedding. Does anyone know this stuff? Is anyone using this as a substrate for Tortoises?
As far as I can tell there's no sand in it. It seems more like a dirt and clay type of thing. It says you...
Thanks for all the awesome tips. I got a better sense now for how to do things. How hot is the water supposed to be? @Speedy-1 said it's not too hot if you can put your hand in... That would mean 100F is ok??? I was under the impression luke warm is the way to go...
Ok, I know this is probably dumb as hell, but... I kinda having trouble understanding something.
It's really important to soak tortoises and you're supposed to do it in warm shallow water for around 10-15 minutes, right?
How does the water stay warm that long??? I mean I'm just scared of the...
Hey guys!!! Thanks guys for all the help. I just wanted to give you an update.
I went by that store again today and they were still there and I still can't decide. I took some pictures this time. Maybe you can tell if they look healthy.
The third one was out today as well, basking under the...
The 2x4 isn't meant to be permanent. How exactly would you define the "danger stage"? One year? Two??? I know they'll get new ones, but those usually get bought pretty soon because they're so little and cute. No one wants the "old ones" which is so unfair... they're stll babies as well!
I wasn't going to buy any of the equipment there except for the enclosure (4'x2', glass, closed chamber) which I was going to run by you first anyway ^^ And that wasn't suggested by them.
Would the substrate used by them and the slight pyramiding be a deal breaker for you?
And do u think...
Hi guys!
I'm planning on getting a tortoise in sometime next year, so the other day when I walked by a pet store I went in for a look and saw they had tortoises (most pet stores don't here in Germany).
I know that getting your tortoise from a pet store usually isn't the best idea, but they...
Thanks for all the input! I've been checking out different enclosure types and planning my setup. My plan is to get everything in advance and have it running for a while before I get the tortoise just to make sure I can adjust everything as needed until all temps and the humidity are in a good...
The pressed wood is supposed to be foraldehyde and silicone free and 100% pet friendly. It's also sealed with epoxi as I mentioned to waterproof it, so I don't think it'll fall apart anytime soon...
I'd love some opinions on which type of enclosure you'd prefere for a baby. Not sure about the species yet. Could be a Russian or a Cherry head... I know they require different climates, but as far as the care sheets I've read here both species need humidity as babies so...
I'm thinking the...
I'm confused... The baby russian tort care sheet here says a 4x2 closed chamber is perfectly fine for the first couple of years, also I've been checking out tons of indoor enclosures on the "Indoor enclosure" thread and a lot of them are significantly smaller and people have said i'd still be...
Thanks for the warm welcome! I've already been going through the forum like crazy and reading up as much as possible. I just thought it was finally time to ask for some specific advice and I wanted to introduce myself first.
Thanks for all the replies, everyone! In this apartment 5x2 is probably the max size I could do, but we probably won't be staying here very long. I'm not too worried about being able to provide more space in the future. Right now I'm more worried about making it long enough for the Tortoise to...
Thanks! Yeah I know we went about it all wrong the first time... :( my wife just has this thing about "saving" pets. We saw them online. A lady was selling them cuz her kids had gotten bored and we didn't know they wouldn't get along. Also in Germany people strongly advice against keeping...
Hi everyone,
I've spent countless hours researching all these different tortoise types and I just can't seem to figure out which would be best suited for the care I can give them...
It's important to me that the tortoise is very sturdy, stays around 10 inches or under and doesn't hibernate.
I...
My name is Sean and I'm a 27 year old geology student living in Berlin, Germany. My wife and I bought a couple of baby Hermann's about two years ago. Unfortunately both of them died not too long after and we never really figured out what happened to them... Now we feel like we should give it...
