I think it's a good way to interact with your tort and get him used to you. There's nothing worse than a tort that is afraid of you. First few times they may be scared but after a while they come round. Just give them some salad.
Yea as Gillian said, tortoises don't do well in glass terrariums/tanks because they get stressed and try walk through the glass. Plastic rabbit cages are great (what I use) or wooden tortoise tables are also recommended. Since money can be tight at times, you may be able to build a table...

Hello. You have a horse-field (Russian tortoise), It's hard to determine the age because torts come in lots of different sizes, but it looks quite young. Oh and I'm guessing male.
