    Eastern box turtle

^What they said. Also, if you are going to have a group, females are better to have than males unless you're looking to breed. Either way, a MINIMUM of three is required, but four or more is better in a group. Just make sure you have adequate space for all of them. But I always suggest just...

HELP !! Injured Box Turtle Hatchling??

Let us know how it goes with the little one if they give you updates? Also it's impossible to sex hatchlings and yearlings, no one will be able to tell for some years if she is male or female.

    Super worms

So was I, which is why I took him to the vet and had a full check up including fecal. Nothing was found and his behavior was that of a completely healthy turtle, so the vet said it could just be that his stomach didn't agree with the supers. My others never had an issue, either.

Saw my first wild EBT today!!

The only other time I've seen a wild EBT, the poor girl was crushed on the road, and this was a year ago. So seeing such a healthy, robust EBT in the wild here gives me hope.

Saw my first wild EBT today!!

Found him while shoveling mulch into a cart to haul elsewhere. We have a company that we have an agreement with that they can dump their shredded tree mulch on the property instead of having to drive 35+ miles to their approved dump location. This beautiful guy was in the middle halfway down the...

What kind of turtle did I find??

I suggest the same as Lexiii. It is often times difficult for a wild turtle to adapt to captivity and they could die from the stress of trying to escape/refusing to eat. Doesn't happen all the time, but it happens enough that I felt the need to give that warning. There are many sliders looking...

    Vita bugs from Pet-Co

REALLY?! Thank you! I'm starting a compost/worm bin and wanted to use Soldier Flies because of how easy they are. I didn't know that Calci-worms were the larvae! Haha I've been giving my guys soldier fly larvae without ever knowing.

    Move hatchling?

Yeah, be careful to make sure the space is big enough for them so that they don't start biting each other.

    When will hatchling eat??

If the egg sack is completely absorbed, you can go ahead and move them over to their hatchling home. You can get red wrigglers at bait shops (along with nightcrawlers which you would have to cut up for these tiny guys, and other good food sources), pet chain stores like Petco and Petsmart, etc...

    Baby #2 is pipping!

SQUEEEE! And look, the egg he/she came out of is discolored and has possible mold. Just goes to show; don't assume a discolored/moldy egg is a bad egg! Incubate anyway just in case!

    Box turtle care questions

The entire enclosure needs to be kept moist. Humidity is very important to these guys, it should be kept at a minimum of 70%. Here is a link to Tess Cook's Box Turtle Info web-book. It has a TON of helpful information listed under chapter heads. Housing, diet, light source, signs of illness/etc...

Beautiful boy! Love the markings. You are so lucky, you may have a few boxies hibernating on your property this year!

Road Rescue - Three Feet Into the Highway

I know what you mean. A month or so ago I was driving to a dog-walk job on a semi-back road and came across a completely squashed an adult female eastern box turtle. It broke my heart, especially since she was relatively fresh, like an hour or two old. My first wild eastern box sighting, and...

Girl or boy? This is a different turtle than before

Yup, female. How old are these guys? They look full grown, but almost child-like in the face.

    Boy or girl?

Yeah I'd say female as well. The #1 indicator is the tail, the concave plastron and red eyes are secondary gender characteristics that, while about 90% chance of male, are not always a cut-and-dry indicator of gender. I've seen females with red eyes and concave plastrons popping out eggs, and...

    New eastern box turtle owner

And of course when he/she gets bigger, a bigger enclosure will be needed, but this works great for now.

    New eastern box turtle owner

Hey it's fine, whatever works. One thing I've seen people do is wrap tin foil over the mesh part of the screen to keep heat/humidity in, while still having access to the clips and tank itself. That tank is kind of tall, though. Do you have a plastic storage bin, like a Rubbermaid, that is...

    Heating/set-up question

I suggest replacing that water bowl with a terra cotta plant saucer. They're much safer and easier to climb in and out of. You need UVA UVB and heat, so I suggest either adding a reptisun strip uvb bulb or replacing your heat bulb with a mercury vapor bulb, which supplies heat UVA and UVB all in...

    Super worms

Yeah I only fed them as a treat once in a while as it was, but after seeing whole ones in the poop of my boxies and immediate pooping of the shells in my toad, I stopped feeding them all together.
