I would definitely NOT recommend to let your tort roam on your floor. The floor is too cold, and your tort could get sick, or hurt by eating something. Do a search on the forum and you find many stories of torts getting injured or even killed by roaming around...
Don't be too afraid!
Salmonella will be present in your torts poo. You could get infected if you ingest this, either directly or indirectly. So make sure to wash your hands and don't let his poo, bathwater etc get in contact with materials you use for cooking (including your sink). Salmonella is...
Hi and welcome!
I also have a redfoot, they are very nice and beautiful torts!
Instead of a dog house I would look into Tom's insulated and heated night boxes. They are relatively easy to make and work very well. Do a search on the forum and you'll find detailed building instructions.
Good...
Interesting question!
I let my redfoot graze on our lawn in summer. She then mainly eats clovers and dandelions, but no so much grass. I also tried to feed freshly cut grass but she didn't really eat it and it made quite a mess with all the small particles :)
I can also imagine the South...
If your redfoot gets direct sunlight (so not behind glass or screens, because they filter out UVB) almost everyday then you do not need a UVB light.
Humidity also doesn't seem to be a problem, so that's great! Wish I lived in such a climate!
The temperature you would have to check. If outside...
Two adult redfoots need a lot of space, much bigger than a bookshelf. 8x4 ft is recommended for one as a minimum, I would go even bigger for two adults.
You could use wood and line it with plastic so it can withstand the needed humidity. Maybe you can use materials the kids (parents) have at...
Hi and welcome!
The temperatures should be around 80F / 27C, otherwise he will slow down and he's not able to digest his food. So you need a heat lamp, preferably a CHE on a thermostate. Do you also have a UVB light?
When the temps are up, also check the humidity (should be 80%).
If you post...
I can imagine in the wild it will also vary greatly between seasons, and availability of different kinds or food.
I have a redfoot and feed her like described above with a head-sized portion of fruit or mushroom almost every day.
Maybe it also depends on the type of fruit you provide. Some...
In that case, maybe you want to consider rabbits or pet rats. They are very social if raised correctly and can be potty trained. Good luck on your search!
What parts of your tort are looking yellow, is it the shell, his skin, the eyes? In most animals yellow skin/eyes/mucous membranes is a signal for liver problems, but I don't know if this is also the case in torts. Pics might help indeed!
Hi Megan, welcome to the forum!
That's indeed a suprising gift to get, especially because sulcatas become very large bulldozers in a few years!
On the species specific part of the forum, there is great info on how to raise a healthy sulcata. Forget all the info from pet stores...
I hope 2...
Are you sure it is a self-ballasted bulb? My first MVB didn't turn on as well, so I thought it was broken. Turned out to be a MVB that needs a ballast, and therefore it didn't work in a normal ceramic socket.
I've already read soooo many stories on this forum of torts getting sick, hurt or even killed by roaming around the house... :'( And they all were very careful. So I would never do this myself, nor recommend it to others.
I think this is curiosity. Or maybe he's checking if you are providing new food! My redfoot also does this (especially in the morning, when I usually feed her), but I never interpreted this as willingness to play/be entertained.
How old is Pete?
Do you have any pics of his enclosure? Is the temperature 85 all over or in a specific spot? What do you use to measure temperature (not all thermometers are equally accurate)? What type of UVB light do you use, how old is it and how high is it mounted?
I think the diet can...
