Seemed like it took forever but it's just about done. Need to section off a bit for my Russian but it is 36x36 and his barn is 12x16. He has a heated night box inside the barn for night. Hugo is 4 and pushing 45lbs. I want to transplant some hostas, mallow, and chicory in there yet & we are...
Not sure how hostas hold up to Oklahoma Heat but they're a go to for me in my outdoor enclosures. The torts don't seem to snack on them much but they're perfectly safe if they do. They spread like crazy and provide good shade cover since they grow in clusters.
For my Russian I used a mix of Coco coir and Fir bark. It's up to your individual preference and your environmental situations. I needed something that held moisture more which is why I have a thick layer of Coco coir with the fir bark on top. Bigger is better for these guys they need a lot of...
Dont do the dog food. There is all kinds of additives in therr that will not help your torts situation. Have you tried baby food soaks? Add a jar or two of squash baby food to your warm soak water. This will help get nutrients into him. The calcium powder can wait a bit until he is eating on his...
I have one of each I have to say my Russian is definitely more active. It could be that the sulcata is just not in the right type of environment or in too small of an environment and is trying to find its way to more satisfactory space.
My Russian is like a pro at destruction so I have replaced my plastic liners and have purchased plastic trays I bought at a farm type shop I'm pretty sure it's used for the bottom of Kennels
Wonderful idea with the mesh bags @Prairie Mom ! I have been wanting to do similar but am too paranoid about the bad weeds that do grow in my yard..... have you come across this concern at all?
Spring mix is ok ish...too much spinach is not good. I buy a good amount of endive, escrole, dandelion greens, and kale in addition to what you are buying. Mostly grass and weed diet in the summer but store bought and hay in winter. If you have access to mullberry leaves those are great too.
In Ohio and my sulcata lives in a heated basement room for winter as well. I have a concrete floor and I put thick rubber flooring over top of it to help insulate. I have a ceiling mounted heater that is on a thermostat and I have a night box with an oil-filled heater built using Tom's threads...
