    Animal Plastics

That's a great setup! I ordered a smaller size (6x3 footprint) from AP and hope it will be done this month. I'd love to see more photos and know what you think of the enclosure as it settles in. :-)

    hermann tortoise

This is the first time I've seen the majority of people in a thread recommend hibernation. I'm curious if you all could elaborate on *why* hibernation is particularly beneficial. I've heard it recommended particularly for the health and success of breeding Hermann's; however, if an animal is...

That's an insanely good deal. Those are Showcase Cages, and they cost $740 shipped apiece!

    New Western Hermann's hatchling

It's been a while since I've posted about my girl, Arrietty. She's now 1.5 years old and a bit of a monster at over 4" and 282 grams. She's as sweet as she can be, and has quite a spunky, personable nature. She's really outgrown her Christmas tree bin and will be moved into a 6x3 foot...

Safest heating option for AP cage?

Yikes, I forgot to reply. Thank you for your help!

Florida Shed or Garage in the summer months.

I'm curious as to why you want to move your tortoise to a shed/garage for nighttime housing? Is this going to be a young tortoise?

    Hatchling Substrate?

Amazon has cuttlebone for cheap. It's usually marketed for birds, and you can get a pack of two for a couple bucks. The food you're probably thinking of is Mazuri tortoise diet. I feed it about 1-2 times a week with some dried weeds and my girl loves it!

    Hatchling Substrate?

You're doing a great job. Daily soaking is a good thing for hatchlings as the littlest ones can dehydrate so quickly. I find it's a perfect opportunity to also do a quick exam. You'll become very familiar with noticing if your little one feels particularly heavy or light on a given day...

Safest heating option for AP cage?

Hi @Tom, I have a question regarding the Arcadia bulbs. As my new habitat will be 24" tall, do you think the 12% Arcadia UVB fluorescent will be sufficient for that height? Or should I bump up to the 14% Arcadia? Thanks in advance for your help!

Building Tortoise Table - need input

Hi Sara, thanks for considering me as a referral but that's not necessary. :) I don't want to discount the other posters' concerns, as they are valid. I'd like to offer some perspective as someone who has kept adult redfoots indoors. It's not an easy feat. Despite our best intentions as loving...

Will do! Thanks for your comment. :)

Safest heating option for AP cage?

Hi Mark, I ended up going with a 6x3 footprint that is 2 feet tall (this is their T30 cage). Animal Plastics does make some arboreal cages that are up to 6 feet tall and they can also make just about any custom size you request. I have been very impressed with their level of customer service so...

Safest heating option for AP cage?

I decided to order an Animal Plastics T30 (6x3x2 feet) cage for my Hermann's. I'm also getting another of the same size with a divider in the middle to house my special needs bearded dragon and my super giant leopard gecko (who's almost as big as a beardie himself!) on each side. It looks like...

    Hatchling Substrate?

Wow, you really do have a teeny one. He looks very young! I would not use hay as a substrate for Hermann's and especially not for a hatchling. They actually need higher humidity than what the pet shop suggested, as pyramiding and dehydration both have been associated with conditions that are...

Building Tortoise Table - need input

This video (and the whole channel) might help show how to build a large wood enclosure, and it points out the indoor husbandry parameters you'll want to focus on with your redfoots. The #1 thing to remember, besides lots of space, is that you must maintain high, tropical humidity levels for...

Adult/Juvenile Hermanns humidity requirement and indoor cage size

I just wanted to chime in on the topic of fast growth. I have a female western Hermann's that's a yearling (hatched October 2015 by @HermanniChris). When I got her in January of 2016, she was 2" SCL and 25 grams. Only 14 months later, she's now 4" SCL and 245 grams. Given the adult female size...

These girls are officially rehomed. Thanks Erika!

Safest heating option for AP cage?

Hi Tom, thanks for your incredibly helpful post. Your bulb combination makes a lot of sense, and you confirmed what I was guessing: the RHP probably won't be a good option in a habitat that tall. I look forward to getting the AP cage and tweaking the lighting and heating before moving her over...

Safest heating option for AP cage?

Hi everyone, I'm getting ready to move and am going to switch up my juvenile western Hermann's tortoise's enclosure. I am toying with the idea of housing her in an Animal Plastics cage that is somewhere around 6x3x3 feet in dimensions. I tend to be pretty nervous about fire risk associated...
