Betadine should be used for only a short period of time. It can in theory over-sterilize an area and cause issues.
Put it on, leave it on for 10 min or so, and wash it off.
Also, I'm assuming he is cutting himself on the outside scute flares? Not everyone is going to agree, but I have see...
I run humidifiers 24/7. It gets very swampy in a hurry.
What I do is set up a few plastic cups upside down under their dishes. This allows me to pull the cups out and shop vac the standing water every couple days.
Keeps the swampyness down, and the humidity up.
What I find that works for me is to put Rubber Mulch on bottom (so water pools), soil and then your top mulch/coir. This allows you to literally pour water into the substrate, keep the top pretty much dry and add huge amount of humidity to the closed enclosure.
You can always plumb in a...

Pretty much anytime pyramiding is happening, it's directly related to humidity. You need a constant humidity of 90% or higher. You can do this by sealing their enclosure and keeping the soil damp/misted, or you can use a humidifier. Either way, need to up the humidity and give daily soaks.
Around a year old now, 472 grams and pretty darn smooth. This was the guy raised with an industrial humidifier at 90% humidity full time.
Just shows what Tom's info can do when taken to the extreme!
Not to be rude, but any tortoise can be raised in cold climates. I live in Canada, and know first hand. Yes it takes money, time and experimenting, but I can be done well.
Now I do give you kudos for you taking the initiative on shipping and finding a good home. I know many on here will jump at...
The unit should easily last 2 years. Every 6 months or so, depending upon water quality, you will need to clean the mist disks in vinegar. I will offer additional disks for those who are lazy ;)
Not sure why people are so up in arms about feeding Mazari every day. Simply chop it up, mix in weeds/other foods and serve. High protein does NOT lead to pyramiding.
I've fed this tortoise a Mazari mix every day for 4 years:
Typically mold/mildew only grows when you have little to no airflow.
Either have a slight opening, make sure hear is correct, or run a Humidifer instead of a 100% closed chamber.
I can pretty much say as a fact, that diet has nothing to do with pyramiding.
My guy has high protein offered at each meal and is perfectly smooth because of the 90%+ humidity.
