You can get small commercial bags of them sliced up in wal-mart, kroger, etc. by the lettuce, you can also find the pads there but they are not always needle-free so be very careful. I wanted to grow some spineless cactus but never got to it yet.
I will get prickly pear pads too and cut them up. Darn slimy but they love them. Strawberries still seem to be like tortoise crack to my guys. They will run after me to get them. I let them roam the yard and they will eat grass and weeds occasionally also. Hope that helps!
I usually mix in either red or green leaf lettuce too, plus other things I may have like tomatoes, other lettuce, bits of fruit. I had been buying a bag of mixed greens from Wal-Mart that had some kale, mustard greens or some other green to throw some in the mix too. Usually twice a week I...
Hey Chase, I appreciate your comments on my male leopard. That hit me a bit harder than I expected. From your other post, I also feed mine a base of spring mix, although I usually leave most of the spinach in since they are adults. They are pretty picky and won't eat what they don't like.
Last update unfortunately. He passed away over the weekend. He developed some issues and stopped processing food so it filled him up because he wasn't pooping. The vet tried everything and I can't thank them enough for their help and the wonderful attention they gave Tommy. I think his poor...
Update: I just picked him up from the vet. had a stomach tube put in to feed him and am giving him Oxbow Critical Care food twice a day and a good warm soak. He's gained back 4 pounds since the first time I took him in and now has bowel movements (which stink even worse than normal). He's...
Update: Still force-feeding him, they say not much improvement in activity. The bloodwork results are back with nothing too abnormal for his condition according to the vet tech. The main vet was on vacation the last 4 days and will be back in tomorrow, so we'll discuss what he thinks once he...
Update: He's at the vet still, in a very warm room to try and keep his body temps up. X-rays were mostly negative, but a possible respiratory infection in the lungs may be starting. He hasn't improved much today but they were able to get a tube in him and some food in his stomach. They will...
Update: found a vet with tortoise experience and good reviews. Took him in on Sunday afternoon. was very dehydrated, no obvious signs of respiratory infection or any other issue. Vet couldn't do bloodwork because the lab was closed for new years, He hydrated and provided Baytril and a Vitamin...
I could really use some of the experience of the group here. My ~10 year old male is not right and I'm not sure what is going on. Started about 6 months ago when I noticed he wasn't quite as active and he stopped trying to mount the females. He still ate and walked around fine, just not his...
Before you cover, what are your humidity readings? If you can hold a good humidity of 75% or higher at the substrate level, I wouldn't bother covering it. I live in a high humidity location by the coast and the usually humidity outside is 65% or higher, so keeping it high inside an enclosure...
It is difficult to say because it depends on physical size and maturity. I have heard of some around 5 years and about 9 inches laying eggs, and I also know of one that is 3 years, 12+ inches laying eggs. I'd say probably over 8 inches or more to even consider breeding.
wow, I've never seen eggs like that before. I've had a few clutches of infertile eggs with my leopards, but none were oddly shaped. I wonder if this is possible because they are infertile. Sorry I can't help more, but maybe someone with more experience will chime in.
12 eggs is quite a few, most of my clutches are 8 or so. As Yvonne said, they will start chalking in few days, however even infertile eggs will chalk. Wait about 2 weeks or more and then use a flashlight against the eggs. If they are infertile, they will glow clear. If something is...
