Hey all,

Long time no post :p

So it finally happened. In the many years that I've had Scooter, the little bugger gave me the slip when the weather was turning cold (Scooter spends the Summer roaming my garden). He managed to survive 3 nights out in weather below 55º (one night reaching 45º). Let me tell you I was bawling so hard, I thought he was dead.

He seem no worse for wear when he finally turned up, but I kept an eye on him and then it happened. The cutest little squeak sneeze which also makes any tortoise owner's heart drop. Scooter was blowing snot rockets.

Got him into the vet and he has pneumonia :(. The vet doesn't seem too worried and she's got him doing double dose antibiotics. We need to go back for 5 more rounds every 3 days.

So here's hoping we both survive this.

Scooter shouldd be fine, pneum. is usually easily treated, it just takes time and meds. The sooner it is treated the better. Keeping him warmer will help. Is scooter still eating? gppd luck!

On top of his ceramic heat lamp I added a floodlight lamp and the temp in his table has risen considerably, so hopefully that should make him more comfortable. (I noticed this morning it wasn't as warm as I would've liked it)

We just got back from the vet, they gave him IV fluids and his antibiotics. He hasn't eaten in over a week, so that has me worried, I'm still doing my best to try to tempt him with strawberries in front of his face, but he seems disinterested. We go back this Wednesday, so I can consult the vet if he still hasn't eaten anything.

He's more frothy than usual when we got home (not frothy at all when we left) and sticky in the mouth and he's opening his mouth and blowing bubbles that way … I hope he can breathe :/

I know they have slower recovery times, but please excuse me while I freak out a little because it's taking so long to see improvement LOL

Meds often throw them off eating, pretty normal actually.

Scooter stopped eating 3 days before he started showing signs of illness. That's what has me worried.

I need a Xanax and someone to come over here and slap some calm into me.

UPDATE:

Scooter got a follow up exam from the vet, they reviewed his X-rays and determined there were no blockages, so they shot him up with some meds to help move his digestive system along. You know you're a tort person when you're excited to get peed on by your own pet 3hrs later (the first of anything to come out of Scooter in weeks).

He still has 2 more injection appointments to go, but he's more active and alert when he's not snoozing.

Last night I put some spinach/strawberry/mango on his rock to sucker him into eating, and he FINALLY had a nibble of food! He didn't finish it like his normal piglet self, but it's something :).

It took my tortoise about 6 months to get over her pneumonia. In time he will be good as new!

What type of an antibiotic are they giving Scooter? Baytril? The eating is definitely a good sign, hang in there!

MORE GOOD NEWS:

Well, for me, not so much Scooter :p … We completed the first 5 rounds of shots, but the vet would like to go the full 10 to be on the safe side.

She took another X-ray and said his lungs have cleared remarkably, just a few more signs of some crud left in his left lung, so that's why we're going to go the full 10. His meds were all prepaid during our first visit, so it's not going to break the bank.

Still a little worried because while Scooter is nibbling on food, I haven't seen any stool :/ …
