That looks good, though I give more than 10% fruits to box turtles. I figure in the wild I bet they eat more fallen berries than they do all those veggies so I give 50% protein and the other 50% is pretty evenly divided between fruits and veggies.

In the Summer when the figs get ripe and fall from the tree my Box Turtles will sit under the tree and eat the figs every day until there are none left. Some days they won't even eat the food I offer them, just the figs. My GC is pretty colorful. I don't know where he came from because Tom gave him to me. Every year when he come's up from hibernation he has more color.013.JPG

@lismar79, how is Crush doing?

Still hiding. I had him out yesterday for a bit under his light and to weigh him. He is down 5 grams :( I put him in a bin with a ffew worms for 15 mins (no water) and he did not eat... I think hes been out on his own twice at least things were moved a bit two time in the past week. I have added 36 night crawlers to his enclosure over the last few days so I hope he is hunting......

All my box turtles outside have dug under for hibernation now. The one's inside have really slowed down too. Even though I have the "summer" lighting going on and plenty of warm humidity, they still slow down. I haven't seen the gulf coast for four days now and the one rescue I have left inside, I havent seen for almost a week. No matter what I do they still know it's time to slow down, so maybe yours is just doing the same thing. Just sayin...

Lisa127 is who I got him from and she said he does do this every year (he's 3 yrs old) so I know its normal. I just worry about the added stress of just getting him to my house and care plus a new enclosure. Any tips????

When I get in a new Box Turtle, I just leave him alone. I keep misting his enclosure providing warmth and humidity. They usually dig under the leaf litter and sometimes I won't see them for days. If they don't come up after 5 days, I'll dig them up and put them in the water dish and offer them some food. As long as their eyes are bright and clear they should be OK. I also throw in lots of pill bugs and worms ....just in case. Eventually they come up on their own. Sometimes I'll see a head sticking out every now and then for a few days. The little rescue that I took in last year didn't come up for days and then when I took him out and soaked him in his water dish, he'd sit there for a minute or two and then just go back into the leaf litter. This went on for weeks.

Thanks, the hardest thing for me has been leaving him alone. My rt was active from day one and sully only took a few days to eat so this is stressfull! His tank is loaded with bugs though.

I agree with Terry. And really, the weight lost is not excessive. Especially since he has been fluctuating the past couple months anyway. I'm telling you once the days started getting longer last winter he perked right up. He didn't even wait until spring officially arrived. Just those longer days.

I added a bunch of more leaf litter today so he can still hide anywhere when he comes up from being burried in the peat moss. I am not going to dig him up for a few days. See how ot goes. His eyes were reslly bright and open yesterday when I had him out so we shall wait and see.

I added a cople more lights, a lid for the other half and the additional leaves yesterday and today I caught him out and about. I quickly got out of his line of sight. Once thing got quite I added a worm to his food bowl and walked away. Just checked and the worm is gone and he is moving around some more :) progress feels good!

The best thing about hatchlings is that they are adorably cute and take up less space. However, they are far more delicate than older animals. Consider an older one. Maybe a rescue.
