Hello Everyone,

Recently a neighbor called me to come get some sort of animal he found in his driveway. it turns out it is a ca desert tortois. My questions are simple but I want to do this the proper way.

First off what does it take to get registered.
Second how long does it take?
Lastly the question of where you got the animal. Am I going to have leagal issues from the fact that he was found wondering in the neighbors driveway. He actualy captured it and had it in his bathroom trying to feed it lettuce when I showed up.

it is never a good idea to take a tortoise from the wild, it can become stressed and die. also keeping the tort in the bathroom and feeding it lettuce is extremely bad for the tort:(. i have no idea about the register part sorry, but are you 100% sure its a desert tort? there are lots of lost torts. please don't take it out of the wild!

no he had it in the bathroom not me. I think its a pet that got loose. its completely fear free of humans it actualy follows humans around but I did put up posters and knock on doors and no one would claim it. he now has a great temporary enclosure. complete with 2 living hibiscus plants and a Bermuda/ fescue grazing area. he does not have anny tags. and ive had it verified its a desert tort by 2 persons.

Please post a pic so we can confirm the ID for you. I mean you no insult, but people come here all the time with sulcatas and other species incorrectly labeled DTs.

If it is a DT in Bakersfield, someone has lost their pet. To keep it legally just contact your local CTTC and you fill out a quick simple form to get your permit.

Hi Nate:

You can get a copy of the permit application from the Kern Chapter of California Turtle and Tortoise Club. They have a web site. Then you just fill out the form. Under "where did you get the tort" you can just enter, "From a neighbor". They really don't do any checking. Then you send the form along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the address on the back of the form. Some CTTC chapters are able to give you your sticker right then and there, I don't know if Kern is one of those or not.

That is terrible that there are that many at the one location....especially if they are all in the same space...hmmm
