You lure them in and make them walk on it.....Genius. I just weed wacked my big enclosure. Maybe there are fewer ants? I'll keep looking. Thanks. There has been no rain for over 48 hours and the D/E remains dry.

Crap! It absolutely FLOODED last night. My experiment is back at step one.

Your telling me! This morning when I walked outback the entire ground is all soggy, it's so weird lol. I live in rainy FL to. :D

From my use with DE it dries relatively fast most the time.

Hi All

Quick question about the Diatomaceous Earth. I read your advice (always treasured) and bought the food grade stuff. My indoor enclosure has gnats (eww). I want to sprinkle the powder, but the soil and bark I use is wet/moist, as I keep the humidity 70% or so. My tort is just a hatchling, and had a rough start, so I'm keeping him moist and always try to have food around for him. Will the wet soil inactivate the DE? If so, should I let the soil dry out a bit and then treat? I thank you for your advice!

As soon as you let the humidity rise, the flies will be back. There's no point treating with DE.

DE Is affected by the damp. You're probably better off adding a few roly-polies as biological pest control

Ok. I'll do it. For this germophobic, bug-o-phobic, doctor (of people, not pets), that's nightmare inducing. Adding bugs.

But all of your advice is spot on, so I have no doubt this will be helpful.
My mental health may be at risk, but my tort will be healthy! I'll go digging for bugs tonight.

not that this has a lot to do with the ants but from a cat person it's good on flea control too. I have sprinkled it on pet beds and carpeting with no ill affects You can safely put on dog or cats but dries their skin out if used too much Used in a tortoises enclosure I would worry about skin and eye irritation

I'm nervous to use it now, as there are rolly Polly bugs in my substrate that I don't want to harm. I hope they take care of things fast, because these bugs are awful.

the gnats are fruitflies and Walmart,Menards and such stores sell traps for them the traps are small, round, usually yellow balls in the insect killer aisle What's used in the traps are just phenamones (spelling ?) to draw the gnats in and they can't get back out and die. This is really sweet stuff but other then that I wouldn't think it's hamfull
