Hello,

My name is Justin and my wife recently brought home a baby Sulcata. I was not happy about this, but the little thing is cute and won me over. She didn't have what she needed the first 48 hours, but after reading many posts on this forum and after many correspondences with Tom, I can say we are well underway to raising a healthy happy tort. Currently, she is in a 55 gallon Rubbermaid storage tub. I have a base layer of cypress mulch and a top layer of organic top soil as substrate. I have 2 CHE's and one 70W flood light for basking spot. A ReptiFogger, frequent misting and water bowl help keep the humidity high, plus I live in the Gulf Coastal Plains, you can take a deep breath here and satisfy a thirst. Her hide is an upside down sterlite shoe box with a hole cut out for her door, which works out great because we have it covered in topsoil to create a 2nd level. The side has a small "window" where we can check on her when we want to with a flashlight. My wife took a cheap Tupperware bowl, cut it in half and connected it to the shoe box opening to create a tunnel effect and to allow her to sculpt the dirt on top of the hide which acts as a secondary hot spot. Her hide has cypress mulch in the back of it and gets misted often. Her diet has been Bermuda hay, hibiscus flowers, leaves, St Augustine grass, various weeds around the house. I read too many bad things about artificial UVB lights and figure since I live in the warm humid southeast, she ought to get all the sunlight she needs with many outdoor adventures in the yard. The heat sources are all held up safely with ZooMed Stands. She likes to climb on top of her hide and bask under the CHE where it is 100F. Having the CHE over the hide, with 2 inches topsoil on top helps me maintain 78-80F in her hide and HUMID. I am constantly checking temps and making adjustments. I need to get a thermostat...and build a proper enclosed chamber soon with dimensions 4x8x4'. I really enjoy this forum and I know my baby Sulcata is happy I found it.IMG_1183.JPG IMG_1184.JPG IMG_1185.JPG IMG_1186.JPG IMG_1187.JPG IMG_1188.JPG IMG_1190.JPG IMG_1191.JPG IMG_1192.JPG IMG_1193.JPG IMG_1194.JPG IMG_1195.JPG

You're giving him a great start...

Wow thanks! That really means a lot cause I don't have a clue as to what I am doing and I have read and gained a lot of knowledge on many of your comments and threads. Ive always been an aquarium/fish guy. I have two beautiful tanks to my left as we speak :)

One concern I currently have is her left eye seems to be shut a lot. But she opens it ok when she wants to it seems.

Oh Jacqui is going to like this one!

The eye concerns me. You hadn't mentioned that before, unless I'm just getting senile or distracted. Just one eye? Could be mechanical injury of some sort. Try to gently flush it during the next soak and keep an eye on it. Did the pet store have a coil bulb over them?

Is that a split scute or just a line thru it? I can't tell...
Did you look to see if there's something in her eye? Maybe splash a little Visine in it or just squirt some warm water in it. Does it have a discharge?

I have a 250 gallon tank with a large goldfish that was bought with a bunch of feeder fish to feed water turtles about 7 years ago. So I have no more water turtles and I'm stuck with this goldfish that seems to be growing at an alarming rate. I've increase the size of his tank 3 times now. Really wishing he'd been eaten like was supposed to happen. I also have a pleco that's about 10 inches long now and he used to live with the turtles too. My extent of fish tanks...:0

I am not sure, but I did for 2 days until I read some threads on this forum. Her left eye seems to be closed quite a nit actually. Then she'll open it and it looks normal and I figure she's fine, but then again it is closed a lot...

Split scute, I think. Will try water first and go from there. I have two nano tanks both under 10 gallons. One has a beta and the other some celestial pearl danios and an erythromicron, and a lot of shrimp :)

Welcome from a Houston gal. Seems there are quite a few of us here from H town. I'm 290/1960 area. Your set up looks good.

Really, thank you for the compliment. I cant tell you how stressed I was for her. When my wife brought her home, I did some topical google research on tortoise care and put close to $600 into the dry method. This forum changed my approach. This setup is SUPER temporary. I am proud though of the little micro climate I was able to create with little money and fantastic results, but I will admit its not as good as fully enclosed. I love this stuff and it helps that she is just so super neat. I had a red eared slider I found in turbulent waters when it was the size of a quarter fishing a dam in Austin Texas I later released when she got huge. I have to admit, I was never all that attached to it as it really didn't seem to have any personality. But these Sulcatas are full of personality! It's a damn shame there is no suitable, humid method, out of the box enclosures suitable for them. Zoomed or the other one...cant remember at the moment....whatever, somebody needs to come out with a suitable enclosure for them to be in until outdoor age.

Thank you! I am down in friendly Friendswood Texas.

Are you guys up for setting up a "Houston Network"?
@mike taylor

I'm think we need a list of all of us in H-town with phone numbers that way if one of is going out of town and needs a tort sitter, or whatever that case may be, that we can call each other.

Not a bad idea. If for no other reason than climate specific stuff it would be good.

Hi Justin, and welcome to the forum!

It sounds like you have it all together. I'm wondering, since you spent all the $$ on getting two light stands, why didn't you get the large ones so you could place them on the outside of the bin instead of inside it? :D

You can cover the whole habitat with foil to keep the warm, moist air inside.

I love the shell pattern. Like Jacqui, split or distorted scutes are a favorite of mine.

I am not aware of any other light stands. Im getting lose to deploying foil, its just hard not having easy visibility. SHe's flipped over a few times climbing around her hide. We have done some landscaping to fix the slopes to avoid that from happening anymore. My wife was attracted to that shell pattern as well :)

I put about 4 spray bottles of water in there (There is a photos of the water dripping out). The bottom is covered with thick plastic held to the sides with extra wide Gorilla Tape. We fill her hide with wet moss and the entire floor is orchard bark.IMG_1196.JPGIMG_1199.JPG IMG_1200.JPG IMG_1201.JPG IMG_1202.JPG
