I'm picking up my first ever tortoise, a young redfoot this Saturday and I've been working to get the right conditions this week. I want to check that my temperatures are okay, it stays around 90 degrees on the hot side and 79-80 on the cooler end. I'm currently using a 100 watt powersun bulb and it's a closed chamber so humidity is always between 80-95%.

Sounds good. But if you could post a pic, we could better help you tweak it, if it were needed

Hi, Aspen, and welcome to the Forum!

For the redfooted tortoise you really don't need a hot side and a not hot side. They do just fine with an overall temperature of around 80F degrees. Read about RF tortoises at the Tortoise Library

how young is the tort.. you may need to just keep the enclosure warm as a both and newly (unacclimated) tort and a hatchling(ish) tort are going to hide and not "bask"

Thanks everyone! She has been home for almost a week now and is settling in nicely. I bought her from a local breeder at Repticon who said she was a March hatchling, putting her at 6 months old.

I have one more question, this time about poop. Monday-Thursday it was very runny, but I read that getting used to a new diet could do that. Today I was excited to see that while it was still too watery it had turned into more of a log shape. Should I be worried about this, or is it getting better on it's own?

Here's the enclosure for the time being. Its a 40g breeder tank. She will definitely be moving outside for most, if not all the time, within the next year.

And another thing, does the bottom of the shell look normal? I'm afraid of shell rot.
