A man driving through the Archibald Research Facility nabbed a gopher turtle that had been monitored and studied since the 1980s as part of a 5 decade research project on the tortoises. He chopped off the monitoring device. Speeding away he got into a fight with his girlfriend who maybe thought he was to cheap to buy KFC. 911 was called and the tortoise was returned and man in big trouble ! Interesting article, I guess during the Great Depression Gopher Tortoises were nick named "Hoover Chickens" because so many desperate folks were tossing them into the stew pots.

What a jerk. And also a big dummy. It's quite obvious the tortoise was being tracked and studied. I guess some people just don't care.

Same should be done to the jerk. Whack off his hands, then he can't steal again. An eye for an eye law would sure put this country/world back in a better place.

I looked up his name on Google, a couple year ago he was arrested for beating an elderly person.

The thief's name was Stewart Butcher!

It is a very well written article. Biologists hadn't realized the tortoise "was gone, much less that it was traveling faster than any other tortoise in Florida." Pretty sad that people ate them in Depression. I had no idea. I get upset when I get those ads to give money to provide guinea pigs to hungry families in Peru.

As I read, I recalled inbreeds living up in the hills at West Virginia. This man may be from there. I do watch movies like Wrong Turn. That is what I learned :p

So happy she was saved by what I hope is now his ex girlfriend. Big ole "1721" on her shell. Duh. That man is evil, playing stupid. Hope they throw the max penalty at him. Ugh.
