im building a closed chamber for my redfoot and i have to use coco fiber cause that is literally all i can find. ive looked all around my area and cant find a single supplier of orchid bark or cypress mulch. anyways, i was wondering how deep i should have the substrate for my redfoot? right now im doing the math for 5" but i was wondering if i could go as low as 3" maybe?

What I use specifically is Home Depot potting soil.
I've been advised that it contains different things like more or less sand depending on your geographic location and source of the soil.

I also get my Orchid bark from Home Depot.
I can tell you what I use.
And what works for me.
I see no reason why coconut fiber wouldn't work for orchid bark. Unless it gets moldy if kept damp. I don't know.
And anyone's plain from the source top soil or potting soil might work as well. As long as it has little sand and no other hazardous things mixed in.

from the size of the enclosure i have looked into orchid bark at home depot and its WAY too expensive. coco coir/fiber is way cheaper. it doesnt really get moldy at all

I use topsoil as a bottom layer, so I can grow things in the enclosure. I also get mine from Home Depot, but you have to sift through the dirt to make sure there are no chunks of glass or plastic.

My top layer is a mixture of coconut coir and forest floor. I put more coir in the areas where I know they like to burrow....ImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1490622814.172891.jpg

alright! ill do that, im still going to buy my coco coir from the website i linked unless i get away cheaper on amazon due to shipping. cause i can get 5 cubic feet for about $80 with shipping. and thats 3" of depth in a 4'x8' enclosure. will look into it more. probably going to do a total of 6" in depth, once it gets finished and more established ill look into plants to put into the enclosure cause ive always wanted to do that

What's your location, baldegale? Why is it so expensive and why have you been unable to find the coir at a pet shop?
im in tennessee, its not that i cant find coir at the pet shop its just at the quantity i need it itd be extremely expensive due to reptile branding and such. and oddly enough to my surprise there is not a single garden store in my area that carries it or orchid bark.
