It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we say goodbye to Joe who brought such great joy to your family and so many smiles to all of us here on the forum with his antics.
You gave him a wonderful, long life, Linda - you should be proud of yourself.
Take care :<3:

It's a horrible shock. It's going to take quite a long time to heal the wounds.

We just sort of assumed he would outlive us and had no reason to suspect there was anything amiss. :(

Like Maggie's Bob, Joe was one of the forum characters and their deaths were too sudden and too soon.

Had Joe died in hibernation, I would have assumed I had done something wrong for his first time in a fridge and probably never have forgiven myself.

The crumb of comfort is that all the family happened to be home that day and got to see him for one last time and that there was absolutely nothing we could or should have done that would mean he would still be with us. Tumours are nasty stuff regardless of species :(

The messages of support in this thread, the CDR and privately have really helped me and my family. We all have to be brave together, Adam. Lots of hugs to you :)

I'm so sorry for your loss. I recently lost my dog Alfie, who I'd had since I was a kid, so unfortunately we're in the same boat. :( As I'm sure you know, things like this really only get better with time. I'm sure Joe had a wonderful life, you seem like a very caring and conscientious owner. Warm wishes and good vibes from Amsterdam.

As a newcomer to this forum, I found, and still find myself thumbing through different threads, just consuming all things tortoise. I quickly discovered, Linda, your and Joe's omnipresence just about anywhere I looked. Your passion is obvious, and it is clear that you and he both are beloved members of the forum. It is also clear that this community is deeply saddened and moved by your family's loss. He lived a loved life.

My deepest sympathy.

I'm sorry to hear this. :(

It was good that the whole family was there on his last day. And your idea of putting him back in his garden is very sweet.

We are simply devastated. Joe came out of hibernation this morning and seemed OK but groggy as you would expect.

During this afternoon's soak his head suddenly went floppy. It recovered but we took him straight to our vet.

Sadly an x ray showed a massive tumour. The prognosis is very poor and we have made the decision to put Joe to sleep.

He's been part of the family for 47 years and we cannot imagine life without him :(
Im so sorry to hear about your Joe....My Henley is only 10 months old and I love him to pieces....I can't imagine how hard it must be after 47 years. Sending positive energy, happy thoughts and {{{{{HUGS}}}}}
