Hi! I have 2 female juvenile sulcatas, 3 y.o. sisters from the same clutch. They were my husband's but he passed away last year and I have been doing my best to care for Thelma and Louise, but it's becoming too much for me. They've been staying inside at night and staying in on really cold days, but are really too big and need an outdoor enclosure. At the same time I don't want to just advertise in my local pet store--I want someone who will truly take good care of them.

I do not want to sell these girls, I want to REHOME them. I'm in CA too.

Hi Diana, and welcome to the Forum!

I'm so sorry you lost your husband. That's never easy.

It's also sad that you have to find new homes for the sulcatas, but I'm sure we can help you. It would be a big help if we could see the "girls." Post pictures of them. If you can't figure out how to do that, send me pictures in an email and I'm happy to put them up for you. emys emys @ pac bell . net without the spaces.

Here is the picture of Diana's tortoises. Please don't jump on her. Bear in mind Diana is not a tortoise person, only taking over the care of the animals when her husband passed:

The tortoises have an outside yard for when the weather's good.

Diana:

If you don't have any takers for the tortoises, you can turn them over to me at my tortoise rescue. My tortoise partner, @Will , lives in San Diego, and he's coming up here in January to help me build some fence for the leopard tortoises. If you'd like to give them to the rescue, he can bring them up to me.

To tell you a bit about the rescue - I have a list of people wanting to adopt. When a tortoise becomes available I go to the first person on the list and take a look at the space they have provided for the tortoise. I look at the fence to make sure it's secure and safe. I check if there's an in-the-ground pool or a dog. Do the gates close securely, is there shade and water, with plants and grass to eat, etc. And while I'm walking around with the person and looking at the yard, I'm getting an idea of if they really know what they're getting into with such a big tortoise.

I try my best to make sure my tortoises go to good homes, and I let the people know that they can always give the tortoise back to me if it doesn't work out.

Good luck in finding Thelma and Louise a good home. I'm sure there are a few people in SoCal who would just love to have them.

Hi, I'm in Texas and would love to take them if you are willing to ship. I currently have a pair of sulcatas and would like to get 1 or 2 females to put with them. I do not breed these guys. Too many unwanted sulcatas as there are but if I can give 1 or 2 girls a good home great. My male will not let me have anymore boys. They live in about a quarter acre enclosure with a heated house.

Hi Diana I'm mike and I'm in vista ca I have been looking for a few sulcatas for pets. We have a large yard over half an acre. With plenty of space for them to roam it's all fenced in. We have a turtle and fish now but have raised many reptiles. You can call or text me at (626) 818-8128 thanks mike

@Mikehino - Diana isn't forum-savvy, but I've been in contact with her through email, so I'll refer your post to her on an email.

Hi, Mike
Sounds like you have plenty of room for sulcatas. What kind of enclosure do you have for them? As I'm sure you know, they can't tolerate temperatures below 62 degrees and need a heated shelter. Could you take a photo of your set-up?

I'm not sure if this works but our large yard is fully fenced. We do not have any tortoises currently. We would build a heated tortie box. My grand father raised Greek and desert tortoise and my father has Greek tortoises in Encinitas.

So I'm struggling to figure out how to post photos I could text them if its easier. We were hoping to adopt because there seems to be like dogs and cats plenty of available animals, and that's how my father and grandpa got their torts

@Diana Yoshino - is it ok if I give Mikehino your email address? I would give it in a private message, not on the open forum.

Mike,
It depends on the type of fence because these girls can dig and can dig right under a wooden or wire fence that doesn't go down several inches. When they were only about a year old, Thelma escaped from the wire enclosure we used for daytime grazing and was finally found by a neighbor 3 weeks later. That being said, they are used to being in a portable wire enclosure and so far (crossed fingers) haven't dug under it yet. But once they get loose, they're incredibly fast.

Thanks for your interest and willingness to take "the girls" but they've already gone to a rescue where they will be well cared for until adopted.

Diana
