Half of my enclosure is filled with cypress mulch from lowes.

The other day while I was digging a hole in it to bury the base of a waterfall thing I found tiny tan bugs, each smaller than the size of a pin head.
I assume these are wood eating mites and won't bother my tortoise, but would like to know for sure.

Will they bite my tortoise?

I'm not familiar with wood mites. I've had springtails and fungus gnats but they are bigger than a pin head. You might be able to get a positive identification viewing them under a microscope or even just a good magnifying glass.

I believe I may have had these in my enclosure once. Do they seem to hop out of the way when you try to squish them? I'm not an expert, but I believe that they won't cause any harm. However, I didn't want them because my enclosure is indoors, so I replaced the log with a concrete one and cleaned out the cage with new bedding. They have not reappeared since
