so I've been researching for months ahead of my plan to get a redfoot in the spring. You all have given great advice so far. I have plans for a significant outdoor enclosure and a heated box using tom's design. However as I'm living through the start of winter here I am a little worried. I do not have indoor room for an enclosure and planned to get an adult or subadult that could be outside all the time. We are experiencing 50 degree days and nights in the 30s. Is my plan not going to work? I can get a greenhouse kit to help warm the outdoor area but will that be enough? I know there are others in the panhandle or coastal Alabama that have torts so I'm looking for advice how to handle our winters. Thank you! The last thing I want is to do all of this work to find that I can't keep a tort happy and healthy where I live. This is why I'm trying to plan ahead.

Hi @JLM and a very warm welcome to the forum! :D

Please begin by reading the so-called "Beginners Mistakes" Thread. And do not worry: you'll hopefully get the help you need at TFO,

Great you are doing research before getting your tortoise! Those temperatures are way too cold for a redfoot. They need 80F during the day and a little bit lower during the night. I don't know how long these temperatures last, but it wouldn't be nice if it had to live in a night box for the whole winter... Could you provide an outside heated shed with enough room for example?

I'm living in the Netherlands, we have similar temperatures or even colder. I keep my redfoot inside for the winters, and plan to get her outside day and night this summer.

Maybe a brumating species would be more suitable for your region?

Thanks...I've been reading on here for 6 months and have read about every thread. I moved here in July so I'm experiencing all the seasons before I get a tortoise and am doing all of my research...hence the questions
