You will find it varies by species, location and personal preference.

However, many keepers feed some pelleted food in the colder months when fresh foods are harder to come by.

Variety is good.

The only pellets I'll use are regular Mazuri and ZooMed Grassland.

Pellets are not "necessary", but I think they are a good way to ensure a more complete diet and make sure our tortoises are getting everything they need.

I have a russian tortoise, and normally he either hates or loves a certain food :p. I may try pelleted food just a supplement. :tort:

If your tortoise doesn't eat it the first few times you give it to him don't give up. It takes my Russian a few attempts before she decides that it is food she will eat.

I have used Mazuri in small daily amounts almost like a supplement. Just recently I have began to use Mazuri as a major component of my diet. Now it amount to 30 to 40% of their diet. It is still to early in my little test for me to see any change.

I try to mix everything up as best as possible. Moisten and mash the pellets (Mazuri & Grassland) mix it with the assorted greens, then top with Tortoise Supply's herbal hay and a little calcium powder. I split this in two, the leopard gets just that (maybe a piece of cactus or small treat) and then the redfoot gets fruit added.

Its like doing the salad bar at Whole Foods!
