Hello everyone. Has anyone used black walnut extract for their tortoises? I'm searching for natural remedies as a yearly preventative approach. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

What is it supposed to take care of?

It's supposed to be a parasite flusher. Without any bad side effects. A member posted about it a few years ago. I'm just wondering if anyone else has used it and their results.

I haven't seen any natural wormers that worked.

I don't think natural dewormers would work if there was a severe parasitic infection, just to cut down on numbers in a still-healthy gut. The pumpkin is safer because most of us have tried it. Have you had a fecal sample done?

Tortoises are healthy and parasite-free. However there are plenty of wild birds that live around the area and I've read that tortoises could get parasites from eating bird feces.

Hence the reason of why I was looking for something natural just for preventative reasons.

I'd just feed the pumpkin. :)

Though I wouldn't worry, many folks on here keep torts outdoors and never need to deworm. Torts in the wild have parasites, they have a symbiotic relationship and the tort isn't hurt by it. It's only when the parasites overwhelm their digestive system that it becomes a problem, and this usually only happens when the tort either comes in contact with another heavily parasite-infested tort or the tort is kept in a small space.

Thank you. I've kept tortoises outdoors for years. But recently there has been a large number of birds making nests all over the place. Which means a lot more bird feces for my torts to eat.

If it's any consolation, I also live in SoCal, a part that is notorious for the massive amount of birds. They are absolutely everywhere and bird poop is also everywhere. My tort has never had any problems outside, but then again he's an indoor tort that only goes outside during the day.

I know thwy use dichotomous Earth and livestock to take care of parasites. It'd be interesting to see if it can be used on tortoises.

I've seen people on here feed it to their torts too. I have no experience with it so I can't say if it works.

My holistic dog vet just recommended this to me today. Not sure if it'll work with torts too.

Keep us posted if you try it out.

I've used it many of times. I would say it's not really for complete irradiation of Protozoa like a panacur or flagyl. But it is beneficial in building the gut flora in many ways. Which can take care of specific Protozoa or internal issues naturally over time. Kinda depends in the scenario in the animal really. I'd say this is a great supplement and or preventative additive to aid in a health gut of tortoises.

This is the first I've heard of it.

Thanks for the discussion everyone.
