Well for one, I myself am a jokster.. If y'all even knew!
I'm new and didn't understand that you guys all communicate often, for all I knew I was being ganged up on a bunch of weirdo strangers!
I do have lots of questions.. I'm a dog groomer so I take pride in my 4 legged babies.. Especially Zeus because we haven never had a tort before.. This lil guy/gal is seriously hilarious and entertaining.. So I want the very best for him... So I'm sure I'll have many more questions... For intense I have no idea if Zeus should be a Zeucy or a Caitlin Jenner... Or how old he/she actually is ...

Well I've met a bunch of the forum members here in person and we ARE a bunch of weirdo strangers, me included, but that's beside the point…
:D

I see grandpa turtle every year in Phoenix at the Turtle and Tortoise Preservation Group conference, and we were talking about this very subject just a couple of weeks ago. That is why he posted that photo and caption. Basically making fun of ME, not you at all.

Great. Stick around. Read a few threads, if you know the stuff great. I still read a few of them every now and then. Just to review something.

Lots of good info to learn or relearn. While most may be review, it won't hurt to glance at it. May even answer a question or two you may have.

I think it will be at least a couple more years before you know the sex. Can't tell when they are immature.

A very warm welcome to the forum to you and your cute tort! :tort:

Please read the "Beginners Mistake" Thread and different care sheets. Ask ANY question when you're in doubt.

And good luck! :)

Hello, there and a very warm welcome to Tortoise Forum to you and Zeus from sunny Morocco.
Lovely tortoise, and I'm so glad you've come here to seek advice and the benefit of the members' experience.
Honestly, you can have fun here, as well as learn to make your tortoise's life as good as it can possibly be.
Here can be found the best, most up to date and complete tortoise information available.

I actually would think itd be pretty cool to do, But I definitely wouldnt do it with species that do not cohabitate in th wild. that also being said, its risky to do with species that mix in the wild because they do not always come in regular contact with each other. I have also learned from my own mistakes, which is why my yellow belly turtle is missing a couple toes from a hungry pirahna.

also, even with their tame temperment towards humans, some beardies do not tolerate other animals. my bigger beardie does not like my small leatherback beardie at all. He even tried to take a bite of his head while sitting on the floor.

Where in NC are you located. I live in Cary and have quite a number of tortoises. Just ask all the grumpy people on this thread, especially Tom (lol) what I keep.

If people you have never met can invoke such strong negative self evaluation, well, wow, WOW.

Yeah on the don't mix species, I am more conservative still and don't mix individuals of the same species (for the most part) so as to have more control over the not so readily visible cornucopia of potential pathogens. I can evaluate the food consumed and the feces from individuals much more reliably.

That Herman's are from Europe and B. Dragons are from Australia, and these captive bred animals have no doubt been in other people's collections for some period of time before they landed in your care further suggests being conservative is a good thing to do about mixing them together. Like those clean things we get colds and flues from. Mixing when feces can get involved is like the protected sex commercial, whoever you've been with and who ever they have been with, all just met, between the two of you.

@Tom is one of the best advocates for best practices here on TFO and has written narratives that hopefully one day he will collect into a book of some sort (yes, I am a bit of a Luddite). I think the Star Trek meme was a humorous poke to be gentle and keep on target. Keep calm tortoise on. No one here should be able to "make you feel" it's text on a computer screen, yeah?

Tortoises as pets are one of the best animals to have as a segway to learn about so much that is not tortoise related, necessarily. The first non tortoise thing to learn from having your tortoise is that text on a screen should not "make you feel". TFO is indeed a 'best place' to learn about tortoise care as well.

Please continue helping us to remember what we have learned over many years and with much discussion is not somehow in the ether and been ignored by you. Remember that first time you were shown how to tie a shoe? You did not know before and yet millions did know. Not knowing is not being stupid. Tripping over your shoelaces after you you know how to tie them is. We all had a first tortoise while also being barefoot. Don't trip yourself. Nobody here will ever try to trip you. We are one big shoed dance party of tortoise fun.

I don't know how to work in "kick off your shoes" to the metaphor.

All tortoise keepers are a special type of people. We take these creatures and value the there lives and help them to grow.

why do I feel like I have to go back 2 school 2 read these posts? Not to be a dead horse but I don't encourage mixing species and I don't practice it.

Welcome to the forum, I'm also new on here. :)

The information shared on here is vast, and some people will have different opinions depending on their region, experience and knowledge, though it may come across as "straight-to-the-point" sometimes, I'm 100% confident it's just friendly advise on how you can avoid mistakes and offer better care to your shelled friend.

In-fact, when I joined up two weeks ago I had set my enclosure up based on knowledge I had from keeping Russian Tortoises many years ago. (Sand/Soil, etc...) This set-up turned out to be discouraged and I was advised on safer alternatives here.

Don't be afraid to keep asking questions, after-all, a wise man once said:

There is no wealth like knowledge,
and no poverty like ignorance.

:)
