We found a RE Slider on our driveway in Petaluma, CA in August... went around the neighborhood asking if anyone lost him, but could not locate the owner. We have given him a home, 40 gallon tank, 2 filters, floating dock, food including fresh live fish and red leaf lettuce. He has a crack on the back of this shell and is very skittish, but seems happy. Unfortunately my daughter is chronically ill and we are struggling to take care of him. I would love to find his original owners, but worry that he was abandoned on purpose, and needs a new home. We will keep taking care of him until we can locate a good home, hopefully someone with a pond so he has room to grow. He is about 6 inches in length, so he is still growing.

Well if you want to ship him to Georgia, then I could take care of him. I have a 55 gallon waiting for him. I plan on billding a huge pond for my turtles next spring.

Although that sounds inviting, I would like to find him a home closer. I don't think it would be good for him to be shipped that far. Thank you.

We have a few small creaks near by. This is a possibility I had not thought of. He wouldn't have been there naturally though, as he is not native to California. It would have been a very large bird, like a hawk, to carry him.

Red ear sliders are a very invasive species here in CA. They are a dime a dozen at most pet shops. They are cute and small for a few months then unfortunately are often released because they are hard to find permanent homes for. They grow so fast.
Yours is more than likely either a wild born or a released one that's gotten big. We see them quite often on the roads sunning, in the irrigation creeks/banks and most ponds.
We have seen hawks here carry bigger sliders that yours. It happens. :/
We are not terribly far from you. Just a few hours. I'll ask around to the few people I know who have actual RES/fish ponds. See if there are any vacancies. My guess is no but it doesn't hurt to ask.
Good luck!
