So much for the quarantine period.

My two female RF tortoises broke out of their pens this morning and were found with my three new tortoises housed twenty feet away.
The gate opens inwards on a spring. I don't know how they figured this out.
Anyway I'll keep the five together.
Luckily my big male and sick female were not part of the jailbreak.
Hopefully no strange new illness will show up. I assume that the new guys are free of diseases. I hope I'm right!
Wish me luck.

Thank God. Until pretty recently I have never had a truly sick tortoise.
I'm pretty sure it'll be O.K.
I just wish I could have kept them separated for a little longer.
I DID get the new trio treated with Panacur, thankfully as a precaution.
I use a small dose on everyone twice a year.

Hi there. Can you explain what coccidia is please. I googled it and it pointed to parasites in the digestive system. Thank you

How long were they under quarantine? I have had tortoises escape quarantine but I have immediately reinstated it. I would not assume anything.
Some organisms and pathogens are not immediately communicated. Why take another risk?

Hi Dan. This is always a subject that intregues me. If I had a tort for ten years then got another fresh wc tort its obvious to quarantine the wc tort.
If I had a tort for 10 years and I took a tort off you that you had for 10 years. (And this was your only tort) Would I still need to quarantine your tort?

The answer for me is yes. The move and change in circumstance could conceivably trigger activation of latent or long dormant pathogenic organisms.
Tortoises in captivity are arguably even more dangerous to others because of the stressors and hygienic issues inherent to captive conditions.

Intranuclear Coccidiosis:
An intracellular parasite in the protozoal family that produces a high mortality rate in tortoises. Well described in multiple species of tortoises. Transmission not clearly defined except that it spreads among a colony of tortoises quickly. Treatment with Toltrazuril shows some promise.

Yes. I could see one colony with a certain level of some type of pathogen and another colony with another, mixing could be detrimental.
I feel that I may have gotten lucky because all five tortoises in that pen now seem extremely alert and healthy.
My sick female and my big male are still separate from the others. (And each other) My female because she may be contagious and my big male because he's a mating machine.
At the first sign that anything is wrong, to the vet they will go.
I'm not planning on adding another tortoise, ever.
