I think Ed keeps his outdoors but then he lives if Florida - Lucky him! I think the min recommended space for any tort is 4' x 8' - more as they grow. I have a 10.5 " leopard living in my old shower room and outside when warm enough.....rarely.
You would need to look at the care sheet for redfoots when you can, to see what's best and if you could meet its needs but to be honest anything would be better short term than what the poor thing has had.

Poor poor thing - but it would be easy to draw the RSPCA's, attention to that ad!

No unfortunately this summer is rubbish! I only let mine out when ground temps are 70+ and in a sunny spot sheltered from the wind but so far this year that's not ben very often. I hope you are somewhere that is getting better for your hols.

Sorry to have to say: that poor tort is anything but healthy. It is in need of a lot of: care, humidity, a healthy diet, and a decent enclosure.

And a warm welcome to the forum.

I hope I can express this without sounding heartless but...
You've said this would be your first tortoise. Presumably you are looking for a lifelong member of the family.

I've rescued torts before, truthfully that shell indicates more than cosmetic pyramiding. IMO it is probable that tortoise has some degree of metabolic bone disease If this is true it will likely shorten its life no matter what you do.

There is also the possibility of vet bills if his immune system is compromised.

I hate to be a " Debby Downer", but for the effort in building a quality environment, the fun and attachment of a new tortoise, and the longevity of these creatures - take all this into consideration.

Poor tortoise. It has been so neglected. There is no excuse for not taking care of a tortoise properly as a person can research anything on the Internet.:(

This animal should make a nice pet, but you will never be able to correct the current damage (carapace). You may in the future have health issues coming out of her poor care also. All you can really do is stop things becoming worse for her health.

Judging from what I am seeing of you in here, I think you would make her a great caretaker. Most often with the degree I am seeing on her, they do okay. You just have to be more watchful of health issue possibilities. I have a couple of severe MBD/pyramiding animals and they are my favorites.

I would take it on. I've got some pyramided torts I rescued. They all have different characters and I love them. Wouldn't part with them for the world. If it only lives 10,20,30 yrs instead of 50,60. You'll have given it a good shorter life. Assuming it lives a shorter life. I know someone with a 30yr old yellowfoot that looks very similar shape to that. It's happy enough.
