Meet Vader. He arrived today. He is two months old, and probably one of the most gorgeous red foot I have ever seen. He is so outgoing. He is all over his enclosure already. He has eaten a mulberry leaf a large grape leaf and a little red leaf lettuce with blended acorn squash. He seems to already know where his food dish is. The enclosure has an ambient air temp that ranges from 84 to 94 degrees. His hot spot is at 101 below his lamp. According to my temp gun his shell temp stays at 85 degrees. I turned the vivurium into closed chambers using a roll of thick clear plastic I have. For humidity I am using an oxygen stone with a air pump in a water jar. I am looking for different options for humidity. The substrate is cococore under cypress mulch, and moss in his humid hide. So what do you think, and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated since this is the first hatchling I have housed in eight years. Thank you so much allegra. We love this little guy.

I'm glad he arrived safely! That looks like a veritable paradise for him. I don't know too much about indoor closed chambers but maybe @terryo and @Redstrike can add their two cents, @Tom may also be able to help. Enjoy him he was a pretty one.

Nice looking red, though to be honest, I do dread him getting older, and taking over the galaxy. :(

Beautiful of course. Never expected anything else from Allegra. I never provided that much humidity or those high temperatures. Just a very warm humid hide and covered the top of the vivarium with clear wrapping tape, and plenty of plants when they were small. Everyone has their own way of doing things. Mine turned out very smooth. You look like you're on the right track. I only raised two Cherry Head's, but from watching friends who also raised RF's differently than I did, I'm starting to think it has a lot to do with food also. Mine never got protein until they were over 6 months old and then only every other week. I gave them a very large variety of foods.....exactly what I gave my Box Turtles, without the protein. Everything was cut up into every small pieces so I knew they ate everything I gave them. If they could lick the dish they would have. Not written in stone......only what I did with mine.

TerryO, you have mastered the art of aquarium/vivariums for turtles and tortoises. Always smooth and healthy growth! I remember when we first started getting hatchlings, we had an old 90 gallon and made an attempt at making abeautigul vivariums like yours. Discovered we did not have the patience and instead took advantage of the outside weather. Much better and better suited for our lazy nature! Impressive.

By the looks of your enclosure i can tell youve done your research. Youve done a good job with it. Looks like you are being resourceful with what you have. I like it. The only thing i would suggest is trying to get the ambient temp range a little tighter if you can, like between 84-86 or somewhere in there.

This little one is doing so well. The shyness has gone away, I can scratch his shell and rub his head while he eats. He seems to not notice me. He was chasing a pill bug this morning and it was hysterical. .
