but caesar lives in a tortoise palace on the table! ringo couldn't climb 4 feet high! is it ok to let them play with supervision?

I've been a professional dog trainer since 1991. Further, I specialize in aggression cases and serious problem dogs, as well as all the run-of-the-mill stuff. Please listen to me. Please...

Tortoises do not play. Dogs see tortoises as toys to chew on, or prey animals inside a tough but fun casing to chew through. Your warm-fuzzy-happy fantasies about what is going on in your animal's minds is going to lead to disaster.

Your dog does not need to be introduced to your tortoise. Your dog needs to be separated from your tortoise now and forever. Physically separated. Permanently. They don't want or need to "know" each other and that would serve absolutely no benefit. Teach your dog to leave the tortoise, the tortoise enclosures and anything to do with the tortoise alone, and don't leave anything to chance.

If you choose to ignore the advice on this thread, your tortoise is the one that will eventually pay the price by literally being mauled and eaten alive.

I stand to gain nothing by taking the time to type this out for you. I'm not selling anything. I get no pay off for swaying you in my direction. I am telling you this for one reason and one reason only: To save your tortoise from irreparable catastrophic harm.

it's not a good idea we're not just trying to be buttheads about it we hear several times over and over " my dog got to my tortoise" or i found my dog chewing on my tortoise and one of the most common responses is well my dog is so tame and love able they could never do that

is it a family dog like your parents got it for all of you or is it your dog?

We have recently started babysitting a dog. We have him 3-4 hours a day 2-3 days a week. He's a 10 year old lab/cattle dog mutt. Super great dog.

I also have a leopard tortoise that has free reign of the backyard.

So, during the time we have the dog it's either:
A) dog in backyard- tortoise locked up in tort house
B) dog in backyard on a leash with me- tortoise roaming the other side of the yard
C) dog in the house- tortoise roaming the yard

I've seen first hand a tortoise that was chewed by a dog. I also used to have a 3 legged tortoise, guess what happened to the other leg....yep, dog chewed it off.

So, I find it important to keep them apart and it's very easy to do. No matter how good the dog is.

Did you read any of the dog threads?
