He might be able to breed again. Not sure. He should at least be able to walk.

Those big guys fight pretty desperately, getting the female into submission. It's very rough and tumble.

I'm not so sure about that, we will see. A few folks I have spoken with have males missing a leg in the back, they still 'hook up' with females. So, after a few months we'll see.
As I said before, this is fascinating stuff.
The femoral head has it's own bizarre beauty.
I have a mixture of scientific interest and sympathy, yet relief for poor Darth.

Maybe just like horses we can figure out a way to hobble the females. Maybe make them wear open toe high heel shoes. Anyways, it has been done with semi aquatics so that the male wouldn't end up drowning the females. Yeah that's right the female was hobbled so the male could procreate and then they were put in their separate tanks. Left to their own devices males would drown the females, but only because the female resisted so much. Turtleback zoo in Orange New jersey. did this with bog and wood turtles.
You shouldn't feel bad, Yvonne.
It's not your fault and you've done more than anyone could possibly have done for Darth.
You know better than most how tenacious tortoises are and how randy they can be.
Fingers crossed that Darth still has a chance of sowing a few more seeds yet.
And other torts in the future will benefit from what poor Darth has been through.

Any new information on Darth ?
He came through the surgery ok and is now at home with Will in San Diego. He will stay there for recovery.

Hi Mike, I did post how Darth is doing theoretically before you asked, but for all I know my response did not post as the time stamp suggests it might have. The staggered way posts get filtered through the "Spy" and "New Posts" can make following threads confusing. I guess it cuts out something bad, but ads nothing good.
Anyhow. he is doing okay, a bit lethargic for lack of a better word. This morning he ate through two heads of Romaine laced with his pain killer and tossed with dry grasses. He ignored the papaya. His surgical area smells okay, so no initial indication of infection. Thanks for asking.

I don't see how they can choke down papaya . That stuff is nasty . My reds love it .

His appetite has waned in any way, I can only tell you if there is good news in all of this that is foremost of it. He got his first antibiotic injection today, about 5 cc of liquid. With a slow and steady pressure it took about a minute to get it in him, but he offered no indication it was going on. If you plunge too fast it tends to be painful.

Man, those key words in sentences. "his appetite has waned" should be "his appetite has NOT waned".
Thanks for setting that straight. I was a little worried, because, as you know, these tortoises are eating machines.
