Is this THISTLE and is it edible?

I have thistle in my yard with tiny purple flowers. I pick it and my torts love it. This thing popped up in my garden. I did not plant it. It just showed up. I haven't used it for feed yet. It looks like a "ginormous" thistle plant.

10-4 there's a bunch of thistle species too, milk thistle, sow thistle. I know milk thistle is good. But they have to be small plants. The big guys can get some seriously sharp spines on them.

That's one of those prickly sow thistle, prickly lettuce weeds. I never can tell the difference between them, but they're both edible.

...WAIT...you said PURPLE flowers? The picture looks yellow. If they're purple it might be chicory.
