Loving all the pictures. Def helps to get the idea. I plan to get a Kane heat mat now. Questions however. The heat may you have abbe them. Does it do a fairly good job radiating the heat down? How far from the tortoises do you recommend? I was thinking of mAking a hide and using a mat instead of lights

Kyle, It works good if you make it just a little higher than the tortoise. They like low tight places to hide and if covered with a tarp it stays nice and toasty. Vic

Central California - winter temp range days 45-55F, nights 30-40F sometimes dipping down in the 20's

Both my species of emys live outside year round.

I have an insulated, heated shed that is divided in two, with the Mee on one side with access to their yard, and Mep on the other side and access out to their yard. I close them in at night, sometimes having to go hunt them down and physically carry them to the shed. And I open the door every morning, regardless how cold it is. They don't seem to care if it's cold or not.

That was a fig beetle. She hunted it down all by herself. Mine have been known to tip over flower pots looking for bugs underneath.

Hey Vic. Great to see you guys finding ways to make tortoise husbandry easier and more effective. My wife and I still talk about our visit to your preserve 2.5 years ago when we picked up our tiny 33gr hatchling. Attached is a photo of Ponce (de Leon-- get it?) today as he contemplates if my hands truck can bear his weight :) Well, that's what you get when you take a Vic Morgan 2nd gen cb mee down to South Florida. He now lives outdoors 24/7 365.
Happy holidays and best to you, the missus and the honkin' gang.
Ron

I ended up building a heat hide. It's 4x2 foot and it's has insulation in the walls and floors. I had two 150 watt ceramic heaters from my old lizard set ups so using those two in the box. Also have a thermostat to keep it around 75. Had it running a few days and it's working well. This morning it was 37-38 degrees and in the heat box it was 77. The two ceramic heaters are able to heat the space to 90+ without a thermostat
