1.5" juvenile outdoor enclosure
How's this an outdoor enclosure? Normally around 95-110 degree summe days and dips to around 65 at night but I will bring him indoors for night time!

RE: 1.5" juvenile outdoor enclosure
Hi collinmcd:

Welcome to the Tortoise Forum!!

I'm going to pick your habitat apart, but please don't be insulted. I only have your tortoise's best interest at heart. I applaud you for trying to have a place outside for your tortoise to get some sun. That's great!

I'm not a fan of rocks in a baby habitat. Its hard for them to walk on, they might try to swallow one and the sun will heat them up too hot.

For a baby, who knows that he is prey, your lovely habitat is too open. He's going to feel very exposed and vulnerable in there. You can fix this by placing some potted plants around inside, burying the pots right down in the substrate.

If you place the habitat someplace in the shade, it might work out ok, but in the sun it will be way to hot for him.

I'd love to see pictures of your baby.

Is your name "Collin?"

...and may we know appx. where in the world you are?

Yes it is Collin! I actually put some chicken wire over top of it to protect from predators and a few log covering. I really didn't know what to put in there first of all And this input is greatly appreciated!! I live in southeastern Pennsylvania and it gets quite hot here! This enclosure was basically a prototype and I will include many more pictures of him!! Thank you so much!

I'll add to that. He needs a water dish and a whole lot more room to get around than that.

Looks nice, but way to small. Needs hiding spots, shade, water dish, stones out. Check out the enclosure threads on this forum. It will give you some ideas. A kids plastic pool would work great for a while. Add some clean, not chemicals or fertilizers dirt, not sand, your slab of grass, some plants, like hostas and a plant saucer for a wading pool and maybe a half log too for a cave to hide in. You could even cover the top of half of it for shade.

I, on the other hand, think that the size is fine for now for a baby only 1.5" long. You do have to protect from predators, though. I would make sure that about 1/2 is shaded. Also, of course food and water dishes, and a place to hide.Just be careful putting such a small one outside.Bring him in if it's too hot, maybe over 90.

RE: 1.5" juvenile outdoor enclosure
I would use the kiddie pool. With everything that should be in with him, he won't have much room to walk around in the posted enclosure. Also he could get over heat quickly in such a small area. The chicken wire is what a lot of us use to cover the enclosures. Also, the threads at the bottom of my post are all great for raising a happy, healthy, hydrated, smooth sulcata, check them out if you haven't already.
Sorry, I forgot on my first post. Hello and WELCOMEBig Grin
