    RedFoot Enclosure Update

Look at all of that grass!!! It may seem silly, but I am excited about this progress! It has been mostly dirt in there for a year and it was hard to look at. More importantly, the demands of the tortoises were starting to outweigh the production of what little remained. The wind has not...

    RedFoot Enclosure Update

No, I used a mixture of shade tolerant grasses for under the trees, and a full sun mixture for the other areas. The surrounding land is dominated by Bermuda and Bahia (which I believe neither are native). I tried planting Bermuda, but it would not take, especially in the low light areas. It...

    RedFoot Enclosure Update

It’s been a little while. Here is a shot from today by the gate. Everything is coming together. Grass seed is really taking this year. I finished the corner near the entrance. You can see the bromeliads, and the stump holding two.

    Atrium Enclosure

Ahh, I'm sorry. I didn't see your post when I replied. 105sqft should be enough for one adult redfooted tortoise, which would love your humidity. I couldn't tell how big/small it really was from the pics. Ideas: 1) For winter, you could build a heated nightbox. If you could put it underground...

    Atrium Enclosure

That's what I want in my house some day. Agreed. You can probably keep a tortoise in there forever, but it may have to be a small species (smaller than a redfoot). A small group of box turtles could be neat. Another way to go would be an arboreal species of lizard. You do have a unique...

    RedFoot Enclosure Update

Today was quite productive! I pulled the giant banana (and pups) out of the winter room, and put it in a new location. I’m trying to keep the middle open for grass to regrow. Last year I lost a lot, so now I have condensed my canopy. More blooms today! I added some small palms. I think I’m...

    RedFoot Enclosure Update

More pics! The blueberries are full of leafs and fruit! Here is one of the bromeliads. I’m trying to find some logs to make natural planters. First attempt. Not deep enough for planting yet. Here is the entrance area which I often neglect to show. As previously mentioned I’m...

    RedFoot Enclosure Update

Spring 2019 So the tortoises are out, and have been since March (with exception to that pesky week in the middle). I have decided to give up on trying to grow grass under the trees and have since switched my plans to making it more of a tropical forest floor with low light/medium plants under...

    Tortoise Nursery Room

I don't think it is a light issue because the plants DID grow...from seed even. It was a high to moderate light plant, but the plants took off. I never inspected the roots fully, and the grass didn't turn yellow, BUT it may have been over-watering or under-watering. Either way, it is some...

    Tortoise Nursery Room

So it has been a while since I have updated the nursery room. Quick summary.... The grass experiment finally failed. Both attempts lead to the grass eventually turning brown and dying. I’m not sure if it’s too much water, or not enough nutrients. Either way, grass is much more demanding than I...

Plants Redfoots don't like to eat?

I've been reading about snake plants too! Thanks! With so many restrictions I'm placing on my plant selection, it can be quite difficult to find anything.

Plants Redfoots don't like to eat?

So, I'm trying to plant some foliage under my canopy that has formed over my redfoot pen. I want to fill in some empty space below/around the trees so they have cover to hide under, and to give the pen more of a jungle/rain forest look. Of course, I don't want to add toxic plants and I'm also...

    Bathing red foot

I'm also one who doesn't soak. It certainly has its purpose, and one is not wrong to do it frequently. I provide mine with soaking dishes and humid burrows, so I don't see the need. I think soaking is useful for breeders who have several hatchlings and new keepers that are just learning the ropes.
