Red-cheek mud turtles, Kinosternon scorpioides cruentatum have been my favorite aquatic turtles since I was in high school many moons ago (the 70's!). I've kept and bred them off and on for a long time. About seven years ago I began to acquire them again after not keeping any for a few years. I started with some very newly hatched neonates from my good friend Eric Holt.
In actual fact, the colors in these photos are faded from camera flash or transferring to Photobucket.
But you get the idea. Red-cheeks can be incredibly nice looking 'mud' turtles!

Wow, very pretty. Love the red nose. They would be great in a commercial for the Walgreens Red Nose Day.
Shells are beautiful too.

Is red-cheeked mud turtle the same as other muds: like easterns etc?
How big do they get? :)

They tend to get larger...females up to 5.5 inches. Although some stay a good bit smaller. There are a number of populations.
Plus, they are tropical so need to be kept warm in the winter.
Otherwise, as easy as pie to keep.

Wow! How beautiful! Question: do females grow "whiskers" on their chins??? Very cute!!!

Both female and male mud turtles of the genus Kinosternon possess 'whiskers' or barbels. Some species have more than others. Peggy has some decent ones 'cause she's older than the others in this group. Don't quote me on this but I think members of the scorpioides group have three pairs, or a total of six barbels on their chins.
See this site for a brief discussion: http://www.backyardnature.net/yucatan/mud-turt.htm
Anyway, yes--female mud turtles (like female people) might have whiskers on their chins.
