In this line of history, some that came through Tremper/East Bay Vivarium(?) ended up with members of what was the "Bay Area turtle and Tortoise" society. They were displayed at Steinhart Aquarium during an annual T&T show. I was 12 or 13 so that would put it at 74/75. I think this may be when Eric Good was first exposed to them as well. Funny how some individual animals have had such a profound influence on the overall interest in North America and beyond.

I'm really glad you are here too Will! Thanks for this!

Will, or others, do you recall a fellow from CA named Brett Stearns? He was active on the board of Steinhart Aquarium as I recall and was an early fancier of sulcata. Perhaps he displayed the ones you recall.

In a similar vein, I attended the CT&TC Show in Pasadena in 1972 and there was one large sulcata there. It was displayed in a baby's play pen and took up more than half of the floor space in the play pen. I believe the owner was named Michael Brown. He only had the one sulcata which I seem to recall being a male. At that time, his tortoise absolutely dwarfed my newly imported 10" ones.

That's the year I was born. While I was into reptiles from day one, I can't say that my parents were. I wish that they had taken me to a reptile show in Pasadena, but no such luck for me.

Here is me and my Dad at the San Diego Zoo in August of 1975. This is the earliest record I can find of my fascination with Chelonia.

I'm the short one there...

I Figured out how to figure it out. The show at Steinhart was 1973, the people who brought the tortoise were Jim and Connie Cembura(?), that was the year prior to Patti Hurst getting kidnapped, odd how memory can build overnight.
Brett was pretty active in many Herp things for many years, I don't know what he may be up-to 'actively' https://www.turtleconservancy.org/contact/stearns/

In the issue of "the Tortoise" from the TC where they discuss using sulcatas in Hawaii as a surrogate for geese in maintaining native vegetation there is a petty good review of sulcatas in north America.

I am a keeper of various animals all shapes and sizes, but my two six month old sulcata's are my latest editions.. I've used other forums before and there's always someone who has nothing better to do than insult my intelligence or try to start an arguement so let me start off by saying, this is a simple question and please stick to the topic..

I've had my two boys (or so I've been told there boys) for a good 2 months now and they've settled in nicely.. both eat, drink and poop (a lot) and I've been monitoring there sizes and weights. and Darwin, the larger of the two seen on the right of my avatar, has been gaining weight a lot faster than Oogway (named after character from Kung Foo panda).. and I've noticed Oogway is more inclined to dig holes in his substrate than Darwin, the growth difference and behaviour patterns leads me to think maybe Oogway is female? I know it's near impossible to tell at this age but would anyone else be of the opinion that it's possible that he/she is displaying female behaviours? Or do some sulcata simply like to dig more than others?
It kinda sounds like you're looking for confrontation, based on your initial question and your follow up replies, just saying.
