I prefer orchid bark for several reasons. It can be found at local garden centers.

That depends on what part of the country you are in. I can't find it anywhere here in the Midwest. It's mostly on the West Coast. I did finally find some on Walmart.com and guess where it's shipping from Spokane WA. Bad thing is it just a 8qt bag for 6.50 But I get free shipping if I pick it up at the store it's delivered to. I have searched for over a year for the big bags here in Oklahoma with no luck.

I can only find it at pet stores in SoCal. I think I tried ordering online from Home Depot and Lowe's but couldn't get it (it was a while back)

Pet store cypress is hideously overpriced and there's no difference in quality, never get it if you can find it anywhere else. I remember it was $20 or so for a single bag and I needed at least 3 to fill his enclosure to the bare minimum. Nightmares.

It's cheaper for me to buy a 24qt of reptibark from amazon than it is to get the orchid bark. I would love to get a few of the 2 CU. bags of orchid bark but the shipping cost is outrageous

To the original poster maybe you can find Orchid bark in Florida, I do use some cypress from Lowes.

I know people grow orchids in OK. They are getting it somewhere. I've special ordered it from my local garden stores in the past. Shouldn't be too difficult for them to order you a bag or two.

Hardware stores don't have it and won't get it for you. You have to go to a "Garden Center" or a nursery. I have several around me and all of them stock orchid bark. In the past when they didn't have it in stock, I was able to order it easily.

I went to 2 of the biggest garden centers in my area and they were clueless what I wanted.

If you live in FL, you can buy Eucalyptus Mulch at Lowe's and Home Depot. It is what I have used as a substrate for 40 years. Unfortunately a couple of years ago, Scott's bought the company which had been producing it for as long as I can remember and immediately stopped selling the product in all states except FL. Below is a photo of the 2 cubic foot bag which usually priced at $3.33. Additionally, if you go on the Scott's web site there is a section called "Where to Buy" which should tell you the stores in your area which have it when you enter your zip code.

Here is a link to that section of the site: https://www.scotts.com/smg/gocat/nature-scapes-mulch-products/cat10800004
